BETTY & THE WEREWOLVES
Euston Station 7"

The debut 7-inch from BETTY & THE WEREWOLVES, three girls and one boy from London who whoop and howl through the night as sweetly sung melodies collide with glitter-struck punk guitars. Taking inspiration from luminary lycanthropes Virginia Woolf and Grandma Wolf, they sing ditties about falling in love with David Cassidy and strange encounters on night buses, shouting all the while and scuffing up their party shoes. [Damaged Goods Records]
BROB
Empty Life LP

Japanese grind at it's best. After 10 years of brutality, they finally have a full length and it was well worth the wait - top notch sickness. Thick Euro vinyl, great packaging - comes with Japanese OBI card. [One Percent Records]
JOE CARDUCCI
Enter Naomi - SST, LA And All That (Paperback)

BACK IN STOCK! JOE CARDUCCI’s Enter Naomi began as the author’s attempt to discover what had happened to music photographer NAOMI PETERSEN. She worked most notably at SST Records in the 1980s. At the May, 2005 premiere of the Minutemen documentary, We Jam Econo, word spread that she had died two years earlier. As Carducci found out more about her years before and after SST, his planned email death notice became a lengthy photo-essay for the web and eventually this book. [Redoubt Press]

DEFEKTORS
Secret Trials 7"

Pick your favorite: simmering rage or handclaps. While perhaps the most lyrically bleak of related Vancouver bands, no one gets the floor dancing, actually dancing and none of that white belt shit either, than Defektors. [Nominal Records]
DIRECT CONTROL
Self Titled 7"

Finally a domestic US pressing of the now classic debut EP by Richmond's one and only DIRECT CONTROL! Originally released in Europe on KANGAROO RECORDS in 2004, this first vinyl release from the band blazes through six tracks of killer early 80's influenced hardcore. [Grave Mistake Records]

FUNERAL SHOCK
Paint Thinner 7"

Four new ones, a cool Black Flag sounding instrumental intro, and more hardcore punk in the Black Flag/Fang/Bad Posture way as before and still just bleak. [Cowabunga Records]

Self Titled LP

New York’s IMAGINARY ICONS churn out an awesome blend of ‘70s Brit-punk, wavey synth-skronk and DIY pop and create their own unique sound. Limited edition pressing of 500 hand-stamped and hand-numbered copies on 180-gram vinyl. Seven tracks. [Daggerman Records]

LOS PEYOTES
Introducing Los Peyotes LP

Psychedelic-garage, surf-guitar, Tex Mex, and rhythm’n’blues from these ‘60s-fueled South Americans who rip it in the tradition of their compatriots Los Saicos. LOS PEYOTES seem to have crossed time and space from the Buenos Aires of 1965 to the swinging scene of today. Thirteen songs. [Dirty Water Records]
MUTATORS
Secret Life LP

Precise and venomous Vancouver ugliness that conjures disparate spirits a-plenty from Teenage Jesus and The Jerks to broad swathes of AmRep's heyday roster. Debut album following 7"s on Grotesque Modern and The Broadway To Boundary, split 7" with Night Wounds on Badmaster, split 12" with Shearing Pinx on Ugly Pop and two songs on the Emergency Room Vol 1 compilation LP. [Nominal Records]
PAINTBOX
Earth Ball Sports Tournament LP

A kinetic blend of high energy hardcore, melody and hard rock, Tokyo’s PAINTBOX second full length “Earthball Sports Tournament” was released on CD in y2k by Japan’s premiere punk label, HG FACT. In the intervening time since it’s release, it’s become widely regarded as one of the band’s masterpieces and one of the greatest Japanese Hardcore punk records released this decade. While blasting with the ebullient intensity and upbeat energy of the best of Japanese hardcore, PAINTBOX cull influences from all over the musical map, incorporating horns, keyboards, strings and more, simultaneously weaving bits of melody, psychedelia, classic rock into their mix of “burning spirits” styled hardcore, surpassing expectations as they blow through unexpected soundscapes at top speed. Re-issued here for the first time. [Prank Records]
PERFECT FITS / TWINKLE VAN WINKLE
Split 7"

The All-Star Memphis group makes their debut with 2 songs. “Childish Ways”, inspired by Jack Oblivian, is written by Scott Rogers of the Cool Jerks, and “All Cried Out” is by Joe Simpson of the Rat Traps. The two tracks kill the current power pop craze with perfect rock/punk melodies and hooks sans the trendy angular jerk. For fans of King Louie and Ponys. Twinkle Van Winkle (real name) teams up with members of Oxford’s Preacher’s Kids (Tyler Keith) with two dark but joyful love tunes also heavy on the rock and power. The songs are “Ain’t Wastin Time” and “Love You So Hard” which she previously performed from the drums in her past band with Scott Rogers, the Jenny Jeans. [Contaminated Records]
PINK REASON
Winona 7"

SECOND PRESSING ON RED VINYL. "During a show with hardcore punks Hatefuck, DeBroux and company traveled to Winona, Minnesota. After a five-hour drive to the town, wasted locals, angry punks and gnarled three-legged dogs greeted them by leading them into a commandeered park. Inside the park, DeBroux found "the ultimate punk rock experience" with townies huffing rubber glue and mohawk-brandishing kids starting fights with crusties. The show ended and the locals gave the band three dollars for their troubles. A few kids asked DeBroux and company to chip in the three dollars on a keg. Soon, the crowd dispersed and left the band with no money or place to stay. The band wound up sleeping on an island between Minnesota and Wisconsin and breaking up soon thereafter. He wrote the first Pink Reason song, "Winona," about this experience." - Steve Kobak from Blastitude #25 [Woodsist Records]
PURE COUNTRY GOLD
PCGEP 7"

Portland's fave party-time 2 piece delivers 4 quick and dirty slices of rhythmic, primitive, nasty garage punk. Edition of 500 on random colored vinyl. [Green Noise Records]
SINKS
Beat Out My Brains 7"

SINKS is back with a new ripper! Sounds like whatever "garage" means to you in 2008, but tastefully filtered through the punk funnel by three dudes that don't have coke habits or PBR sponsorships. [Fashionable Idiots Records]
The SLEAZE
Smokin' Fuckin' Cigs And Other Hit! 7"

Smoking Fucking Cigs is an ode to angsty teenage shit bags worldwide and the flip is a slowed down thumper with the same snot drenched vocals. Two ace cuts penned by four weirdos with fresh high school diplomas, maybe. [Fashionable Idiots Records]
TEMPLARS
Out Of The Darkness 7"

This is the first new material from UK Oi heroes THE TEMPLARS in over two years. [Templecombe Records, UK]

Como Now - Voices Of Panola Co., Mississippi CD

Deep in the heart of Mississippi lies Como, a small rural town where children and grown folks alike have been living and breathing gospel music for as long as they can remember. In July of 2006, Daptone Records placed a small ad in a local paper inviting local singers to come down to Mount Mariah Church to record their songs. The result is Como Now, a stirring collection of traditional and original gospel from the voices of Como’s own families. [Daptone]

AGAPE
Problem Is Sin - Live & Unreleased CD

Official reissue plus five bonus tracks. "This 8-track only live recording from a California college gig in 1973 captures the band in just the right jammy guitar-psych mood you hoped for. Extended excursions on tracks from their studio LP's, plus a title track unique to this release; all of it certain to please any fan of westcoast Jesus psych-rock with a dose of Hendrix and keyboard prog/jazzrock..." -- The Acid Archives [Hidden Vision Records]
CAVALIERS UNLIMITED
Nasty / Soul Vein 7"

Limited one time only edition of 500. Hard to find North Portland funk 7" recorded in 1968 -- two sides of the roughest breakbeat funk you never heard; only a few original copies are known to exist, most of those in poor condition. [Mississippi Records]
CONCRETE RUBBER BAND
Risen Savior CD

Official reissue of this Christian underground basement psychedelic rock album, a massively-rare 1974 release on the Missouri-based American Artists label (AAS1164), of which only 2 or three copies are known to be exist in private collections. Despite the song titles, this is actually a strange and unusual rock album which just happens to have religious undertones. Organ, fuzz guitar, male and female lead vocals and masses of electronic embellishments. [Hidden Vision Records]
CRYSTAL STILTS
Crystal Stilts + Shattered Shine 12"

Hazy, lazy Brooklyn reverbbb heads. They've drawn (appropriate) comparisons to Velvet Underground, The Felt, and their spiritual bretheren in the Factory Records sphere of yesteryear, but they're sounding pretty fuckin' fresh to these ears. This release compiles their previous four song 12" and debut 7", both recorded several years back and just now getting the wider exposure they are due. [Woodsist Records]
DAVILA 666
Self Titled CD

Vinyl coming soon! Hailing from San Juan, Puerto Rico, Davila 666 is one of the biggest rock 'n' roll attractions in the country. Their sound is the combination of obvious rock 'n' roll classics like the Stones, Stooges, Velvets, and Dolls, along with less likely influences such as Mazzy Star, Li'l Wayne, and Plan B. "We are like Menudo (the group-- not the soup) on lots of drugs," says singer Carlitos. [In The Red Records]
FIGURES OF LIGHT
Smash Hits LP

They came and combusted as teenagers thirty years ago in New Brunswick NJ, fueled by a steady diet of the Velvet Underground, Stooges, Troggs and Pretty Things. Now they’re back to retake the two-chord monte in SPADES! Wheeler Winston Dixon wails while Michael Downey cranks up the proto-punk x-factor on this snarling set including their alarmingly faboo first single (originally pressed in a quantity of 100), newly unearthed live recordings from their first show ever in July, 1970, unheard demos and new NYC live and studio recordings. Essential! [Norton Records]
LOS EXPLOSIVOS
Self Titled LP

Los Explosivos are belting out rip-roaring authentic garage, en Español! [Slovenly Records]
LOVER!
I’m Not A Gnome 7"

Three more cuts of pop genius here. If you dug the HoZac and Rob’s House singles, the Douchemaster split with LiveFastDie, or his LPs, then the buzzsaw guitar, Rich's voice, and classic lyrics (see "Booger In My Asshole") will not disappoint. That said, look for more intricate and classic (see kraut) stuff on here. [Tic Tac Totally]
POCAHAUNTED
Island Diamonds CD

Dubbed out and drenched in the grime of the streets, Island Diamonds features the same vocal come downs and chord repetition/progression to infinity that P-haunt is know for, but with the addition of almost "danceable" beats. Their most developed/realized work yet; features additional saxophone riffage by ANDY SPORE (RACCOO-OO-OON, YOUTH OF THE BEAST, PUKERS). [Not Not Fun Records]
ROBEDOOR
Shrine To The Possessor LP

BACK IN STOCK! Debut LP. This one is pure darkness - no light, no air, just tortured souls and echoed cries. Three epic droning processionals built from the heaviest, thickest low-end tones. The sound of indentured servants from a scorched dustbowl wasteland. Limited edition of 500 with silkscreened poster. [Music Fellowship]
SUARASAMA
Fajar Di Atas Awan 2xLP / CD

FAJAR DI ATAS AWAN was first released by Radio France Internationale (RFI) in 1998, and the title track appeared on a Smithsonian Folkways compilation in 2000. This release is the first U.S. issue of the entire album and its first-ever release on LP anywhere. Suarasama is a group of many members, mostly ethnomusicological musicians. Founded in 1995 by Irwansyah Harahap and Rithaony Hutajulu, they are based in Medan City in North Sumatra, Indonesia. Suarasama plays contemporary music, exploring conceptually or instrumentally the sounds of African, Middle Eastern, Indian, Sufi Pakistani, Eastern European and Southeast Asian and particularly Sumatran traditions. Arranging this diversity of sounds and instrumentation, Suarasama come up with more than the sum of their parts; music that mitigates the absurd generalization in the name “world music” with an organic approach. This organic quality is deeply compelling; the quiet beauty and simple intensity of FAJAR DI ATAS AWAN express the album’s title (“Dawn Over the Clouds”) with a clarity that belies the complexity of the group’s compositional methods. Faith is a theme of the lyrics, which even when not translated or understood, convey their essences with a meditative, prayerful approach, often using multi-part harmonies that indicate at (and create in the listener) higher ecstasies. [Drag City]
SUN ARAW
Boat Trip LP

Boat Trip might be some hidden soundtrack to Donkey Kong warp-whistling straight into Ayahuasca Country. In about twenty minutes Sun Araw manages to navigate a psychedelic jungle cruise through canopy din & spooked drone, then he noses the boat out of the water and lifts into uncharted dub-spheres. The back half of this entranced tour is like being (fortunately) trapped inside an old Upsetters jam played at half-speed with twice the shaman-chant and reverb drenched percussion. Normally we wouldn't trust taking this kind of trip with just anybody, but with wheel and rudder alike in the hands of Magic Lantern co-captain Cameron Stallones, we can sip our yage-of-choice in peace and share the Sun Araw vision as one. limited to 500 on black vinyl... [Woodsist Records]
TREES
Light's Bane LP

The darkened sky and rain-soaked soil of Portland, Oregon, gave birth to the sickly black doom of Trees. Their two-track debut is a shivering trudge through murky, thick, sub-bass sludge riffs with an occasional beat or two. Recalling the early days of Sub Pop-era Earth and the diseased doom of Burning Witch, Trees continue in the fine tradition of low-end wreckage that the Pacific Northwest seems to breed in its purest (de)form. [20 Buck Spin Records]

Give Me Love - Songs Of The Brokenhearted: Baghdad 1925-1929 CD

This is the second in Honest Jon's series of albums exploring the earliest 78s held in the EMI Hayes Archive. In the mid-1920s, The Gramophone Company -- soon before it became EMI -- employed two or three Europeans to criss-cross Iraq. They logged regional demographics, assessed the German competition, and checked out the scores of record shops and hundreds of musical venues. In Kerbala, its man fearfully disguised himself as an Arab. This was the groundwork for three sessions, conducted in Baghdad in the second half of the decade, which produced nearly 1,000 recordings. Business was good -- the first group of records, though deemed aesthetically unsuccessful by the Company, immediately produced 12,000 sales to just two outlets in the city. Drawing on the full range of these Baghdad recordings, it is a wondrous, deeply poignant glimpse of social living since obliterated, in which ethnicities, faiths and traditions appear woven richly and meltingly together, however precariously. There is dance music featuring Arab folk singers from the countryside, backed by professional Jewish musicians in Iraqi styles popularly termed "Egyptian," and perfected in nightclubs where the first duty of the secular women singers on this album was prostitution. Also including some Arabic word-play, in a nod to the musical form of the Arabic mawwal, a Hebrew hymn is kick-started with a cry of "Allah!," most likely from one of the Jewish performers. There are pieces from Bahrain and Kuwait; sometimes mixed together in one performance -- the different dialects are far-flung. There are beautiful, high and lonesome Kurdish violin improvisations; and some unaccompanied circular breathing on a zourna so unearthly it seems to cross late Coltrane with Sun Ra. All the songs are characterized by searing emotion and crises of feeling, many by erotic urgency. As with the other titles in the series, the recordings have been startlingly restored at Abbey Road; and they are presented with full translations, rare photographs (in this case, several performers), and notes -- including an extensive interview with a citizen of Baghdad throughout this period, who knew many of the musicians here personally. [Honest Jon's]
WOLFMANGLER
Cooking With Wolves LP

This is the vinyl edition of WOLFMANGLER’s CD release on Digitalis Industries, minus the bonus tracks. Avant folk by way of doom metal depression. All acoustic. Packaged in a silkscreened glue pocket sleeve, red and silver on black stock, same as the CD version, but with expanded art. Includes three inserts, screened in the same colors with printed labels. Edition of 500. [Black Horizons Records]
ZOMES
Self Titled CD

Zomes' self-titled album is full of beautiful Seesselberg-sized chunks of loop-like melodies that effervesce while Osborne brings them to life. There is a cinematic quality to the material here that recalls "library music," East German Indianerfilmen soundtracks, and even Blues Control at their most humid. [Holy Mountain]
August 14, 2008
AMERICAN CHEESEBURGER / CANADIAN RIFLE
Split 7"

Georgia pummelcore meets Chicago melodicism. [Rock Bottom Records]
DEAD GHOSTS
Holy Ghost 7"

Slobbery, syrupy, meely-mouthed trash du jour. Black Lips fans take note. [Boom Chick Records]
DEBRIS’
Static Disposal LP

Legendary dada/punk/psych masterpiece from Oklahoma circa 1976 known mostly for its inclusion on Nurse With Wound's list of LPs they "borrowed" from and its appeal to fat guys who just can't get enough rare records. Debris' cultivated its own dynamic musical vernacular showing the influence of Beefheart, the Stooges, early Roxy Music and other pre-punk mainstays of their time. This expanded edition features all 11 original tracks from the master tapes along with 10 previously unreleased rehearsal recordings, including out-of-this-world versions of "Real Cool Time" and John Cale's "Gun." Packaged in tip-on style heavy jackets with inserts. [Anopheles Records]
DRY RIB
Whose Last Trickle CD

DIY with a guitar-genius/nonsense poet only begins to explain Dry Rib and the projects that followed, but they were one of a tiny handful of DIY/post-punk-era groups who’d probably have sounded the same whether Punk had happened or not. And things only got cooler, odder, and more idiosyncratic as Rob Vasey’s audio insurgency progressed. Ed Ball of O Level (and later the Times and Teenage Film Stars) saw Dry Rib first in late 1978 and promptly signed them to his new Clockwork label. He writes, "Dry Rib were a late '70s three piece group of some indefinable power - not Powerful in the obvious sense, as in everyone slugging out the same riff... More the power of musical and lyrical imagination... Rob Vasey's guitar style of blurred chord stylings coupled with continuous tremolo arm pre-empted My Bloody Valentine (or anyone else) by the best part of a decade." Twenty songs packaged with photos, lyrics and extended notes. [Messthetics]
ELECTRIC BUNNIES
Fantastic Metal Eye 7"

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! “Three records, and now three significantly different sounds for this Florida trio. ‘Fantastic Metal Eye’ is the new one, and its painfully tinny exterior showcases some decent garage/wavo chops, in more of a synthetic manner befitting of their first single, but without forgetting the charge of punk rock in the mix. But I prefer ‘Chewing Gum,’ as it’s not as aggro, but still carries the heft of isolation and lash-outs at abandon that keep this sort of music vital. The ‘throwaway’ side on this (shortie ‘Super Fluorescent Hippo Flashback’ and existential wanderer ‘The Stranger’) might be my favorite side of music these yobs have yet to produce. But both are good enough to own, and play multiple times.” -- Doug Mosurock (Dusted) [Columbus Discount Records]
FIERY FURNACES
Remember 3xLP

Massive 51-track opus of recently reformulated recordings. [Thrill Jockey Records]
GANG WIZARD
I Remember You From The Party In Long Beach 7"

"...An angelic force, delivering a unique thrash-bliss sound to the world. Sparkling synths and homemade glitter electronics are combined with whirlwind drums, screaming vocals, and aluminum spring guitars." [DNT Records]
GOODNIGHT LOVING
Up North Girl 7"

Latest from these Wisconsin heroes... A-side is this year's summer anthem of wanting and loss produced by Greg Cartwright, B side's got two rustic living room rompers! [Bancroft Records]
HUMAN EYE
Fragments Of The Universe Nurse LP

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! "Watching HUMAN EYE onstage is like being attacked by space aliens. They are like something dreamed up by Philip K. Dick during an acid flashback, a science fiction sound world with rock and roll roots assaulting all of the senses. Their second full-length release, "Fragments of the Universe Nurse," continues their musical mission with more mind-derailing time changes, laser-beam synthesizer blasts, hallucinatory overdriven echoplex, and a generally brutal assemblage of disparate elements from a sonic palette that ranges from mid-70's punk rock to psychedelia, prog, free jazz, and Sci-Fi movie sound effects." [Hook Or Crook Records]
IRON AGE
The Way Is Narrow 7"

Local crushers deliver a heavy dose of Leeway-via-early-Metallica riffing on the A here, and the flip is an impressive cover of Satori Part 1 by Japan's legendary Flower Travellin' Band. [Painkiller Records]
MAKOTO KAWABATA

MOSQUITO BANDITO
Woo Woo Woo 7"

"This'un combines the best features of the Mans and the Reatards and fits 'em all on one conveniently-sized one-sided 7"! Like, it was recorded and mastered by Brooks, but you can't really tell, because it could've been mastered by a monkey peeing into a coffee can who had one hand on the dials. It's a hot single, though. You can hear what sound like X (Australian) songs through the murk, and we all know how fucking awesome that band is." -- Pat Reisinger [Boom Chick Records]
MUDBOY
Mudmux Vol. 1 7"

This is the first installment of a series of 7"s to be released by various labels. Each record contains a single track on each side by a different band- produced, mixed, orchestrated, destroyed, mutilated and brought back to life by the dark dreams of Mr. Mudboy. Side A of this first edition features an unearthed file by the Extreme Animals resurrected as a tribute to "Lil John Carpenter." Percussion by Jeremy Lazy "animal" Magnet Harris. Side B is a devastating whirlpool cliff walk based on a song written and sung by the DarkDarkDark band. Backup fingers by Alec K Redfearn of the Eyesores fame. Limited to 535. [DNT Records]

THEE OH SEES
Hounds Of Foggy Nation DVD+CD
Master's Bedroom Is Worth Spending A Night In CD

Somewhere beyond nostalgia, beyond the garage, somewhere beyond the fireside song and supposed goo-rock, you will find the latest incarnation of THEE OH SEES, now a quartet composed of John Dwyer (OCS, Coachwhips, Pink & Brown), Brigid Dawson, Petey Dammit!, and Mike Shoun. "Thee Hounds Of Foggy Notion" is a brilliant live performance collaboration between THEE OH SEES and video director Brian Lee Hughes. The project resulted in a double-disc DVD/CD set featuring live performances filmed and recorded, not on stages, but at a variety of hauntingly scenic sites in and around San Francisco. "The Master's Bedroom" (their newest proper album) weaves Dwyer's signature AM radio howl with the catchiest of driving tunes, Dawson's gorgeous harmonies, heightened fidelity, thick spring-reverbed bombast, mighty drums (at times in pairs), and an undeniable pull. [Tomlab / Castle-Face]
WILLIAM PARKER
Double Sunrise Over Neptune CD

The third and final installment of AUM Fidelity’s collaborative releases with Arts For Art, Inc. presenting specially commissioned works which made their debut at Vision Festival XII in June 2007... An orchestral work featuring immensely gifted individual and collective voices from around the world, meshing as one to manifest a pair of deep bass-groove driven mantras. Featuring both Hamid Drake and Gerald Cleaver on drums (each tremendous masters of rhythm and sound), a full string section, full keyed-in young Shayna Dulberger on bass, and renowned Indian Classical Vocal master Sangeeta Bandyopadhyay (flown in from India for this auspicious occasion) singing William Parker’s lyrics on one piece, and then the mantra Surya Pranam and a Persian Tarana on the other. ÊThis is serious (other) World teleportation music that achieves psychedelic proportions of sonic interplay.
PERFORMING FERRETS
No One Told Us CD

28 songs from one of D.I.Y.'s iconic bands, including most of their astonishingly scarce LP, which music-historian / journo / D.I.Y.- enthusiast Johan Kugelberg described as “the most seminal LP to come out of DIY. Fantastic over-enthusiastic juvenilia of an almost supernatural beauty.” Whether or not the name was ironic, The Performing Ferrets were very much a performing band whose songs clearly grew out of the way they interacted. A curious rhythm, an engaging riff, an arresting lyrical snippet, and frequently a Melodica tumble and writhe, ferretlike, into song / groove / experiments that stood unique on the indie post-punk scene. The Ferrets started out in Maidstone, Kent, in 1978 but they soon settled in Manchester while parlaying academic careers in Manchester, Portsmouth, Nottingham and Preston into appearances all over the U.K.: John Peel once lamented that every gig he deejayed there seemed to be a Ferret there “clutching a demo tape in its sweaty paw”. There’s a touch of The Fall and the TV Personalities, a little garage and Beat, hints of the rhythm-propelled sounds of the Monochromes, Feelies, Beefheart, Gang of 4/Delta 5 or Diagram Brothers, and a dry wit that had more to do with the Ferrets’ favorite authors and comedians than anyone from the class of ’77, but the Ferrets’ response to D.I.Y. was all their own... The complete saga’s in the 12-page booklet, along with photos, artifacts, and almost 80 minutes of the Ferrets’ finest on the CD. [Messthetics]
SHEPHERDS
Bush Babies 7"

Free-form psych-drone with different tape effects thrown in there too. Members of Woods, Non-Horse, Wooden Wand and others. [DNT Records]
SHIT AND SHINE
Kuss Mich, Meine Liebe 2xLP / CD

NOW AVAILABLE ON VINYL AND CD! Eight sprawling sonic puddles of Gibby's spittoon soaked puddle juice emerge from the hot flaps of England's Shit & Shine. Combing a dense percussive chug & a megaphoned fart helmet the band emerges with a sound closest to the neck ache of powerful metallic headbang & the distorted totality of cheap speaker decay. The band has been known to employ up to 16 separate drummers & 12 feet of vertical bass amplification, so they are no strangers to erecting long standing brown waves of sound, an onslaught of bass boomed rock totality. [Load Records]
SKY JUICE
Hard To Kill LP

BACK IN STOCK! Severely mangled guitar gunk astral-projected from deep inside the twisted lobes of Lambsbread's Zac Davis. Unavoidable private press vibe, with mumbled cliff's edge moan and groan vocals, drums courtesy of the Corwood session-player circa Electric End, and guitar rave-ups that share a tattered couch with The Index, Raven, Low End Lars, and Vulcan. Limited & numbered edition of 300. [Olde English Spelling Bee]
UNHOLY TWO
Kutter 7"

"...when I thought this was gonna lurch into some Brainbombs gruntage, THE UNHOLY TWO flies into Science Fiction Comic Book Land--a kinda galloping thuggery that rides on a defective laser beam. In this hard-to-alienate-the-parents world, this is a record that will annoy ma & pa. As I am for anything that reestablishes punk rock's secret musical cult, I very much endorse this damage. Excellent.” -- Scott Soriano [Columbus Discount Records]
WARCRY
Not So Distant Future LP

Birdcore supergroup Warcry does not deviate from their Discharge/Meanwhile influenced bulldozer heavy hardcore on this 3rd LP. Dig in. [Feral Ward Records]

Split 7"

Limited to 500. [Zum Audio Records]
DIGITAL LEATHER
Sorcerer LP / CD

Digital Leather has become a shape shifting force in the new "it" genre of synth punk. With a handful of sold out singles and LPs under his leather jock strap, Shawn Foree is now preparing his magic wand for the masses. He's traded his synthesizer for a guitar, and Ryan Wong for a full band. He's still recording songs himself in a bedroom in Arizona. He brings his band and the a disc of recordings to Memphis, TN for Gonerfest 2, then drops a sonic A bomb of a set at the Buccaneer Lounge in the middle of the afternoon. Luckily it is all captured on multi-track by a crack guerilla recording team. Home recordings from that time become Side A to SORCERER; Side B is the live recording. Chillingly delicate and abrasively aggressive [Goner Records]
The FAINT
Fasciinatiion CD

A record whose themes include predictions and the future, tabloid culture, the allure of what may never be, childhood lost and more, Fasciinatiion sounds as if it's been beamed in from a satellite whose sole purpose is observing, and making sense of, the details of every day existence. In certain ways, the album is the most mechanical and precise of the band's work: The vocals sound less human than ever before; the bass lines are more mangled, keyboards spiral and squeal out of control; electronic pings and stabs invade the melodies; the lyrical anxiety and disdain of previous albums pervades on every song. [Blank Wav]
FAMILY UNDERGROUND
Helium Rug One-Sided LP

Denmark's drone demons release another one. A helium rug would float, which is exactly what your melted mind will do while listening to this record. Whistling blown by the birds of hell. Limited to 300 [DNT Records]

Self Titled CD / LP

GIRLS
Lust For Life 7"

"Good, melancholic bedroom-pop song, winking at all the shit that messes people up and getting past it with uncluttered, lo-fi production and a bouncing melody" -- Pitchfork. Limited to 500 [True Panther Sounds]
JUCIFER
L'autrichienne 2xLP

A 21-song concept album exploring the French Revolution and Marie Antoinette's relationship with Louis XVI (And of course, how can one not draw a parallel between the demise of the French monarchy and the plummeting approval ratings of our own idiot prince?) Comparisons to sludgy bands such as the Melvins and Sleep are inevitable, but a double-album's worth of material showcases their songwriting range from catchy, off-kilter rock songs reminiscent of early Pixies and breathy folk melodies to the bone-crushing doom rock their fans have come to expect. [Alternative Tentacles]
MAGIK MARKERS
A Panegyric To The Things I Do Not Understand CD

BACK IN PRINT! Before they cleaned up their act for last year's 'Boss' LP on Ecstatic Peace! Magik Markers' defining album was probably this: a live noise-rock masterpiece in two acts. Divided into two twenty-ish minute halves, the album presents two different aspects of the Magik Markers sound: the 'California Side' embodies the group's most exuberant, flailing performances, populated by stream of consciousness lyrics, endless feedback stretches and no-chord rock & roll, while the 'Paris Side' explores a more considered, desiccated approach to discord and improvised noise textures, sounding like a single, extended tune up session that never quite manages to get there, interspersed with hacksaw pick scrapes and vacant utterances from Elisa Ambrogio. [Gulcher]
MAHONIES
We Got Coney 7"

The debut release from this Detroit drums and guitar duo featuring CRAIG the bassist/vocalist from THE TERRIBLE TWOS. Eight snarling tracks about hot dogs and shit. Completely ripping. [X! Records Detroit]
NODZZZ
I Don't Wanna Smoke Marijuana 7"

"Modern Lovers meets 'Gloria' on the A-side. Respectably fun Camper van Beethoven rip on the flip... Bands like Tyvek now have some serious competition. I hope they're ready" - Doug Mosurock, DustedMagazine.com [Make A Mess Records]
ONEIDA
Preteen Weaponry LP

[Jagjaguwar Records]
ROBEDOOR
Shapeshifter Slave LP

Shapeshifters are messengers and imitators of the gods. Shapeshifters can be divine or human. Crossing boundaries between sacred and evil, they often bring messages, power or punishment from the gods. Shapeshifting is used to gain access to the tower. They are able to turn any situation around. Nothing is too much or too little. The shapeshifter can invert a life-threatening situation into one where he triumphs. This form of shapeshifting is most commonly painless but can be traumatic if the change was unintentional; clothing is rarely lost in this process. Edited, assembled, and mastered with assistance from Pete Swanson of the Yellow Swans. Ectoplasmic cover art conjured by France's Parisse Bruno. Pro-printed black and white covers and insert. Limited edition of 425 copies. [Olde English Spelling Bee]
SHADES OF BROWN
SOB CD

A lost nugget from the Chicago soul scene, and one of the rarest 70s albums on Chess! The album's filled with great tracks in a range of soul styles -- sweet, funky, and Northern Soul -- all wrapped together with a tightness that rivals The Dells or Temptations at their best, and topped with harmony vocals that are simply mindblowing. First time re-issue. [Dusty Groove]
GENE SHAW
Break Through CD

Rare genius from trumpeter Gene Shaw -- a player who worked famously with Charles Mingus (under the name Clarence Shaw) on the albums Tijuana Moods and East Coasting -- then disappeared from the scene after having a famous fight with his leader. After a few years of silence, Shaw resurfaced in Chicago with this brilliant debut as a leader for Argo Records -- a wonderful album that's filled with as much soul and emotion as his sessions with Mingus. The group have a slightly modern take on hardbop -- often straight and hard-swinging, but with plenty of room for the players to really stretch out with a great deal of expression. Shaw's trumpet tone is amazing -- right up there with Lee Morgan or Kenny Dorham at their Blue Note best -- and the rest of the group is wonderful too -- especially tenorist Sherman Morrison, whose work here is a real discovery. Chicago dates like this never got their due back in the day -- and this CD reissue finally brings Shaw's post-Mingus work into focus. [Dusty Groove]
SIC ALPS
US Ez LP / CD

"San Francisco's Sic Alps take a modern approach to the psychedelic sound, with reverb remaining a key ingredient, and effects a routine tool, but with a sound more organic than their '60s predecessors, the final product something more roughly hewn and imperfect." -- FakeJazzdotcom. If you've been jonesin' for an LP that calls to mind equal parts Bob Markley and Uli Trepte, then look no further, mein dueden (und duedetten). US EZ is the virtual brick of Berlin / Big Sur hash we've all been waiting to break into. [Siltbreeze Records]
STONE HARBOUR
Emerges CD

Extraordinary basement psych re-issue! "What's a boy to do? It's 1974, you're young and have a head full of Hawkwind and Roky and the Elevators, and old brutalist blues in the Hound Dog Taylor/Fred McDowell backwoods whisky-fucked mode; you're stuck in Hicksville, USA; the music scene sucks: glam's dead or dying slowly; punk is a good year or so from even starting to get itself born. Town's too damn small to even muster up a band. It's just and your buddy and that's it, man. So you grow your hair and wear satin, wander wide-eyed and tripping across small-town railway tracks and hang loose at the weekend in your basement. You gather a bunch of cheapo instruments on the never-never and you start cutting low-fi bedroom demos. Stone Harbour were Ric Ballas and Dave McCarty, and out of nowhere and nothing, at entirely the wrong time, they cut an LP that will blow your head clean off. This is a trip into the true dark heart of psychedelia... [Lion Productions]
SUNFOREST
Sound Of Sunforest CD

There was once a band called Sunforest, who recorded a splendid album for Deram-Nova in 1969. The record is (as has been said elsewhere) a unique compendium of UK acid folk with a popsike feel, sporting harpsichord and (somewhat) medieval-tinged arrangements integrated into electric and acoustic folk-esque tunes. But one thing must be said straight away: the Sunforest album is not at all twee~the songs are far too clever, and the production (by legendary producer Vic Coppersmith-Heaven) has far too much depth~we say this despite cover art that seems to have misled people since the album was released. Worthy of special mention is the phenomenal folk/funk vibe-fest 'Magician In The Mountain,' which has made this LP the object of desire of many a DJ and a sampler. [Lion Productions]
TRADITIONAL FOOLS
Self Titled LP

Debut album of 60's garage trash, surf-y reverb, and raw LA punk raunch from this bay area power trio. Get a taste here. [Make A Mess Records]
US GIRLS
Introducing LP

"Like fellow DIY ingenues Sally Strobelight and Inca Ore, US Girls' approach is deceptively ethereal and delightfully haunting; lithe, lysergic gamma rays of keyboard murk beamed over percussive bonk sort of resemble Diamanda Galas reinterpreting Suicide's Red Star. And dig that cover of Bruce Springsteen's 'Prove It All Night,' done in such an effortless, barbital lush you'd swear the air was filled with mescaline. Guess what? It's not" [Siltbreeze]
July 30, 2008
ANALS
Commando Of Love 7"

The Anals were Benoit and Nafi. Hailing from Metz, France, home to a ridiculous number of genre-bending bands, most of which they play in (like A.H Kraken, Electric Guitars, The Dreams, Plastobetton, Scorpion Violente, Funk Police, and more), this is their first (and only?) 7” and it’s a two song ass reamer. Taking the sheer repetitive brutality of a band like the Brainbombs and meshing it with the trance-like drone of a band like Suicide, these two songs have the guitars, drums, and synths all set to attack, and are not for the faint of heart. [Sweet Rot Records]
ASTRO / HIROSHI HASEGAWA
Live At Muryoku Muzen Temple LP

Astro is Hiroshi Hasegawa’s solo project. He is a founding member of the Japanese noise group C.C.C.C. Born in 1963, Hasegawa began his improvisation with his voice and drums. In 1990, he made the group C.C.C.C. around the concept of improvised mass-noise with a very loud sound. Members included Mayuko Hino, Ryuichi Nagakubo, Fumio Kosakai. Hasegawa began his solo unit ASTRO with analog synthesizers in 1993 and continued playing in C.C.C.C. Though C.C.C.C. is no more, Hasegawa has continued with Astro and his numerous collaborations drifting between dreamy spaced out bliss and full on waterfalls of beautiful noise.
BILLY CHILDISH & HOLLY GOLIGHTLY
In Blood LP

BACK IN PRINT! Though they've worked together countless times in the past on other projects, this is the first collaboration as a duo between HEADCOATS and HEADCOATEES masterminds BILLY CHILDISH and HOLLY GOLIGHTLY. Backed by the MEDWAY DELTA REVIEW (BRUCE & JOHNNY of The Headcoats with JOHNNY GIBB of the WILDEBEESTS), the two trade vocal harmonies with clanging guitars to make complex blues music that's rooted in a a single chord. [Damaged Goods Records]
WILD BILLY CHILDISH & THE MUSICIANS OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE
Thatcher’s Children LP / CD

With his latest combo, The Musicians of the British Empire, Billy carries on his tradition of home made punk and rhythm and blues. This is their third album in as many years, and its a barn-stormer! [Damaged Goods Records]
COUSINS OF REGGAE
Quartz LP

Blake Hargraves & Liam Thurston's dirty rock overdrives everything from under a sickening haze -- guitar, drums, turntable, homemade feedback devices and homemade drum triggering systems. Volcanic Tongue admire "this Canada-based riot squad" for their "riffs that sound like 'I Wanna Be Your Dog' tied to streamrollers and dragged on their face through industrial warehouse [combined] with the deforming use of clotted effects [and] endless vistas of crunch." All covers are handmade (screenprints, stencils, hand carved stamps). Australian import [Spanish Magic Records]
DARK MEAT / DIPLO
Split 7"

A limited edition 7-inch pressed specially by Chunklet as a merch item for a show. DARK MEAT unleashes their version of Iggy Pop’s “Success,” followed by DIPLO, who rocks his “Unsuccessful Space Dub.” Yellow vinyl pressing with sweet artwork on the sleeve. [Chunklet]
FACTUMS
A Primitive Future LP

Factums have preciously cut some major art-damaged rock moves for the Siltbreeze label. A Primitive Future is intended as a soundtrack to an imaginary movie and it's a totally beguiling and mysterious spin. The sound is dense, claustrophobic, Xeroxed rock, taking the more extended strategies of the weirdest Dead C sides and compacting them into blunt riffs and sunken vox that feel like some of the most primordial, defiantly monochrome psychedelia this side of nowhere. There are a bunch of long tracks, all convincing monosyllabic traverses of the nowhere zone, cut up with shorter tracks that use amp-huzz, keyboard bleeps, pinging strings and percussion to generate minimal, almost Sun Ra-styled, instrumental fantasias but the whole thing is so oblique, so perfectly unto itself, that it's hard to find any truly accurate comparisons outside of suggesting that if you dig the sound of the 90s underground and you like it as distended and alien as all hell then this is the kind of environment you'll enjoy sinking to the bottom of. A weird-ass one for sure and recommended. Limited to 400 [Assophon Records]
GROUPER
Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill LP / CD

NOW AVAILABLE ON VINYL AND CD! Portland, Oregon based avant-folkstress Liz Harris aka GROUPER's newest is a surprisingly trenchant exploration into the world of Cocteau Twins-esque left-field dreampop. Haunting, memorable, and perfectly ragged around the edges. [Type Records]
HI-GOD PEOPLE / ZOND
Split LP

The Hi-God People side was recorded around the same time as their recent split 12-inch with fellow NZers The Dead C; it has live snippets from their show at The Palace supporting Sonic Youth and recordings from a radio 3CR session. Their live shows vary from cosmic rock jams to evolution performance art epics. Pop stars doing the tango with some psychedelic monk. Named after a satellite of the USSR, Melbourne Australia's Zond broadcast dark ecstasy from a place far below outer space, like a Rorschach blot or a Freudian analysis gone wrong. Their live shows vary from a screaming psychedelic car crash to ambient metal. With current and past members of On, Fong, Library Punks, Mum Smokes, Ned & the Meds, The Stabs. All covers are handmade (screenprints, stencils, hand carved stamps) [Spanish Magic Records, Australia]
JACK OF HEART
San Francisco 7"

"Departing completely from the static-soaked, overdriven throb prerogative of their previous bands, Jack Of Heart is a new conglomeration of Piero from the Fatals and Demon's Claws, and Benji from the Creteens. Their sound takes off down the tender side of the switchblade, and erupts with such an unassuming immediacy that it's tough to pinpoint the first time it slithers through your head. With a decidedly less noisy sentiment in place, Jack Of Heart combine echoed and chilling guitars that form those little icy patches that cause you to slip, and fall in love" -- Todd Killings [Rob's House Records]
LOVE TAN
Self Titled 7"

Hailing from Seattle, the six songs on this single display the wide range of sounds the band is capable of, which is all the more impressive considering that they are only a two piece made up of Matthew Ford (Factums, ex-Intelligence) on drums and Craig Chambers (The Lights) on guitar. The vocals range from falsetto to baritone, the guitar can sound sparse or punishingly full, and the drumming can go from methodical to off-kilter, and all in the same song. This is their debut release, which will be followed shortly by a full length on Kill Shaman. For fans of Tronics, The Urinals, The Prats, etc... [Sweet Rot Records]
LOVER!
Man In The Woods 7"

"Rich Crook has already blazed a frightfully righteous pop pathway with Lover!, showcasing the hidden songwriting talents he kept to himself with such notable bands as the Reatards, Lost Sounds, and Viva L'American Death Ray. Once his songs reached the surface in The Knaughty Knights, it was apparent that Crook needed his own vehicle to spread his pop sense to the outer limits of the rock'n roll underworld" -- Todd Killings [Rob's House Records]
PAAVOHARJU
Laulu Laakson Kukista CD

This is the highly-anticipated second full-length release on Fonal Records from Finland's Paavoharju, a collective formed around two brothers -- Lauri and Olli Ainala and their troupe of associates. The group is a collective project of ascetic born-again Christians. Laulu Laakson Kukista (A Song About Flowers of the Valley) evokes the sounds of raindrops falling on a sheet metal roof melting together with an old television's random dot-pattern noise. Backwards pianos, backwards vocals, tilted organ and baroque beats lean against sweeping operatic soundscapes and gossamer back-porch folk singalongs. Leena Uotila's soft voice echoes in empty, dusty rooms. [Fonal Records]
BILL QUICK
Maravillosa Gente LP

Long in the works reissue of this amazing and little know gem from 1972.A finely balanced mix of sounds that drifts between throbbing electric full band groove and gentle acidfolk. When bill wants to rock, things get downright funky, with a wickedly hard-hitting rhythm section, pumping organ, scorching electric leads, and flipped out acoustic guitars all locking into some seriously tight jams. Then the next minute the mood swings and you’re deep into some beautifully fragile and introspective folk meditations; often just two acoustic guitars, bill’s lyrics, and huge, angelic, vocal harmonies all weaving together into lush tapestries of sound. A few tracks fill out a more folkrock vibe with flute, autoharp, piano, slide guitar, banjo, and more. Bill’s lyrics (all in english) and vocals always feel deeply sincere, which combined with his unique voice, unusual accent, and loose delivery make for one hell of a cool singer. The whole album has an air of mystical psychedelia, yet never strays far from pop craft, and there's a real sun-blasted quality to it all that just makes you want to crank the volume. [Time-Lag Records]
LEE RANALDO
Countless Centuries Fled Into The Distance... LP

An epic earful, replete with shimmering textures and an inimitable charging clangor. With ecstatic, rocking squalor, he summons some dazzling shronk, reminiscent of early SY, the soaring drone of John Cale, and even the looping orientalia of Dream Syndicate-era La Monte Young. [Table Of The Elements]
RAZORCAKE Magazine
Issue # 45

Issue number 45 gets heavy with a ton of political commentary, along with features on LEATHERFACE, BAD REACTION, RKL, Infoshops, and more. Also included are the regular columns, reviews, etc.
SEA DONKEYS
Live At The S.S. Marie Antoinette LP

These guys previously had an LP available via the Sun City Girls' Abduction label but this is their best yet, a divinely ragged live blast that combines a more garage rocking taking on the communal folk breakdowns of The Cherry Blossoms with killer Shaggs/Godz style drum violence, drunk choir vocals and the kinda fidelity that makes it all sound like a great VU Bootleg. There are inspired covers of material like "It's A Rainy Day" by Faust and Albert Ayler's "Ghosts" (which wins out over countless lame indie free jazz versions by re-staging it as a melancholy avant rock dirge as played by Don Van Vliet and the Maher Shalal Has Baz orchestra) and the more rocking sections are a near perfect amalgam of primitive avant brut, stumble punk oblivion and beautiful melodic chord solos. Recommended. [Assophon Records]
SKYSCRAPER Magazine
Issue # 28

Issue number 28 comes on strong with features on MELVINS, THE FAINT, ISLANDS, WOLF PARADE, BLACK ANGELS, ONEIDA, MAN MAN, CRYSTAL CASTLES, MODEY LEMON, JAY REATARD, KING KHAN, and tons more.
SPIDER TRIO
Rendezvous LP

Wally Shoup's new avant rock/free jazz group, featuring Soup himself on saxophone, Dave Abramson on drums and Jeffery Taylor on guitar. Shoup is on fire-breathing form throughout, scorching the omni-directional time signatures and bursts of single note violence with rasping smears of breath and almost Peter Brotzmann-like furies. There is some good, responsive dynamite throughout but it sounds best when the guitar and drums get down on their hands and knees and just generate this low, vibrating rumble while Shoup nose-dives into them again and again. Limited to 400 copies LP on this new US label with connections to the whole Sublime Frequencies/Sun City Girls axis. [Assophon Records]
TAPE OP Magazine
Issue # 66

Issue number 66 of your guide to creative music recording punches in with features on ADAM FUEST, STEVE ROSENTHAL, SLOAN & NICK DETORO, ADAM FRANKLIN, VINNIE CASTALDO, BILLY BARNETT, PALEO, and DOUG ROGERS & NICK PHOENIX, plus recording tips & secrets, gear & CD reviews, and more.
SIR VICTOR UWAIFO
Guitar Boy Superstar 1970-76 2xLP

The first survey of the long career of the legendary Nigerian musician, artist and poet Victor Uwaifo, one of Nigeria's greatest stars -- a long-overdue release that puts Victor Uwaifo next to other Nigerian greats better known in the West. Victor Uwaifo's mission to spread and preserve the cultural heritage of ancient Benin (Modern day Edo State, Nigeria) has seen him work as a commissioner for cultural affairs in his native Edo State, a University lecturer, acclaimed bronze sculptor and poet as well as a highly successful musician. He has been awarded Nigeria's highest cultural tribute -- the order of the Niger, and continues to teach and work today with an energy that has not abated for nearly fifty years. Cutting his musical teeth with Victor Olaiya ("the evil genius of highlife") in the early '60s, he went on to form his own band The Melody Maestros, producing Nigeria's biggest-ever selling record with Joromi in 1965, for which he was awarded Africa's first gold disc. He has continued to produce some of the most popular and engaging music in Nigeria ever since. This album focuses on his early 1970s musical output. Uwaifo invented a unique style of highlife music that he called ekassa -- based on ancient rhythms and fused with modern highlife instrumentation and just a dash of rock and soul. [Soundway]
RONNIE VON
A Maquina Voadora CD

It is clear that the psychedelic effects of Tropicalia were not confined to Os Mutantes, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, and Gal Costa; Von takes a poppier angle in getting to a similar fuzz-guitar driven musical landscape, but not only does he get there all the same, on this album the pop is minimal, and the fuzz supreme. It's difficult to describe how balanced this album is, as it features truly one-of-a-kind songs, which include any number of effects and treatments of Ronnie's enchanting voice, all of which matches perfectly with the mysterious and melancholic songs on the album. [Discos Mariposa]
WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM
Two Hunters LP

Organic black metal with hints of avant-garde noise. [Southern Lord Records]

BORIS
Smile 2xLP / CD

NOW AVAILABLE ON VINYL AND CD! Upon reflection of the aftermath of releasing their most successful album to date--Pink--BORIS has found the desire to create sounds that are a wider extension of just simply music. They are searching for sounds that are also an extension of life and the many experiences they’ve had since Pink’s release two years ago. Drawing on hair metal, Japanese cartoon songs, and 1980s Japanese pop singers to help shape their new direction, the band delivers another evolutionary step in their broad based sound. Blistering psychedelia, mammoth hooks, innovative songwriting and a reinvention of dark heaviness all get their due. Features guest appearances from STEPHEN O’MALLEY and MICHIO KURIHARA. [Southern Lord Records]

HELENA ESPVALL & MASAKI BATOH
Self Titled LP

"Geographical, cultural and musical boundaries are well and truly blurred in this appealing project featuring the enigmatic Japanese guitarist Masaki Batoh (the presence behind avant-psych Ghost) and Swedish born cellist, vocalist and guitarist, Helena Espvall... Given Espvall's previous form (specifically the abrasive extremes of her 2006 solo album Nimis And Arx) and Batoh's penchant for experimental, often atonal, improvisation it might have been expected that the sounds resulting from the pair might strip paint and shred wallpaper at a 100 yards. Instead they've come up with something beautifully fragile, remarkably melodic and enticingly charming" -- BBC Review [Drag City]
KARL HECTOR & THE MALCOUNS
Sahara Swing 2xLP

Now-Again Records follows up The Heliocentrics' percussive excursions into the astral realms of psychedelia with an album of Afro-tinged funk music originating from the Southern Sahara and recorded in Germany. [Now Again Records]
JANDEK
Ready For The House LP

The 1978 release of Corwood Industries #0739, "Ready For the House", began one of the most compelling, disturbed, and singular legacies in musical history. In the 30 years since this unique debut, Jandek has released 53 albums of mournful, atonal music that continues to defy classification and accessibility. And while the past three decades of intense productivity have yielded a depth of discussion, a handful of legendary live performances and even a film documentary, no amount of time or experience can prepare a listener for the experience of "Ready For the House." Beyond stark, beyond oblique, beyond outsider, the first Jandek LP (originally credited to The Units) explores musical territories no one even knew existed, with just a hollowed-out voice and a lonely, detuned guitar. In 1985 it had infamously sold less than ten of the 1000 copies originally pressed, however by 1999, when it was issued on CD, the vinyl had completely disappeared, with original copies changing hands for hundreds of dollars. This exact vinyl repress on Corwood Industries, is the first time "Ready For the House" has been available on vinyl for nearly 20 years, finally giving collectors and fans the opportunity to own one of the most peculiar, solitary, and strangely magnetic records of all time. [Corwood]

MILK N’ COOKIES
Self Titled 2xLP

This is the definitive version of the 1975 Glam-Pop classic! The complete LP on one record and 6 studio bonus cuts on the 2nd LP. Influenced by Sparks, Roxy Music and Sweet; these Woodmere Long Island boys were flown out to England to record this masterpiece of starstruck teenage anthems. Released at the wrong time and with barely any record co. help, this brilliant record couldn't get a foothold at the time. The time is finally now, with Milk N' Cookies popping up as major influences for bands like The Busy Signals, Cheap Time, NoBunny, Baby ShakesÊand The Pets and recently getting the front cover treatment from pop-obsessed mag Rock Mania. SHINING PATH
Take You So Low So You Can Fly So High LP

"More known for their weirdo psych minimalism as Monsov Swirnoff, documented heavily by Eclipse Records the last few years, here they get down to some confused and slippery boogie-spazz with the finer elements of Jap free spirit futurism informing the process. Fucking out there and great..." - Arthur Magazine

SOCIAL JUNK
Concussion Summer LP

The greater midwest 'hood is responsible for so much of the U.S.'s most living musics it seems like lately. Out here on the west we tend to get a bit blissed and burnt and, conversely, eastern seaboarders can fall into a condensed-consciousness that sometimes doesn't translate well to those outside their bubble. But in the middle country there's often a rawness that's honest and real and really clears the ears/mind, and for our tastes Ashland, Kentucky's Social Junk are champs at this direct, red-blooded approach. Somewhere between the Bible Belt brutality of Sword Heaven and Tusco Terror and the sticky southern electronics of Pax Titania or even recent Wet Hair, SJ navigate an interesting interzone, boiling together ominous loops, mangled sax, heavy riffs, various vocal moods (pissed, lost, aggro, angelic), militant tribal drumming, and a mess of electric atmospheres into something genuinely gripping and wholly their own. [Not Not Fun Records]
SONIC YOUTH WITH MATS GUSTAFSSON AND MERZBOW
Andre Sider Af Sonic Youth CD

Merzbow). The single piece performed was a structured improvisation which for 60 minutes added and subtracted musicians one by one until only Akita was left onstage. Black Sabbath followed. [SYR]
SPARKS
Introducing Sparks CD

Originally released in 1977, this was the seventh album by Sparks and the only one of their 20 long-players not available on CD. Until now-- the duo's own label, Lil' Beethoven Records, are putting it out. Finally, you can hear the much-discussed but rarely heard transitional album from Ron and Russell Mael's near-40-year career. Heard today, the album sounds less like made-for-heavy-rotation AOR and more like a comment on, or rather a series of pastiches of (all right, then: acerbic attacks on) daytime US radio-fodder: imagine Randy Newman as program controller in charge of America's airwaves for some idea of this satirical yet highly commercial meta-rock. [Lil Beethoven]
TORCHE
Meanderthal LP

FINALLY AVAILABLE ON VINYL!! Can a band be absolutely crushing yet sweepingly anthemic at the same time? Miami's Torche have not only figured this out, they've mastered it. Their third release, Meanderthal, is simultaneously oppressive and powerfully uplifting. "heads full-bore into a world where brutal riffs, churning rhythms, and soaring vocal melodies coexist, and compared to the bulk of repetitive heavy music out there, the sound is not only very different from the rest of the pack, but it's also a most welcome change." --Popmatters [Robotic Empire Records]
WOMEN
Self Titled 7"

Rip off records punk mixed with early uk punk mixed with early 80's hardcore punk. That's a lot of punx. [FDH Records]

ABE VIGODA
Skeleton CD

Coming from the same team as LA punk champions No Age and Mika Miko... Abe Vigoda bring forth a sound that is tempting and beautiful, yet melodic and tropical -- a shattered and splattered mix of no wave, pop, darkness and hope. [Post Present Records]
CLOUDLAND CANYON / LICHENS
Exterminating Angel LP

This collaboration between the mellow, Memphis-meets-Germany duo of Kip Ulhorn and Simon Wojan (a.k.a. Cloudland Canyon) and Chicago's great rock 'n' roll concierge and knower-of-mystics Mr. Robert Lowe (a.k.a. Lichens) is the sound accompanying a spacecraft that's a combination Death Star and Taco Bell from the 1970s filled with cement Mayan temples and pyramids populated by large, snappily dressed reptilian beings. [Holy Mountain]
EAT SKULL
Dead Families EP 7"

A fresh single of melting pop mixed real loud for huffers and heffers from these northwestern psycho sinners. Be sure to check out their great new LP on Siltbreeze also. [Skulltones]
HOME BLITZ
Weird Wings 12"

This is the sound of a bedroom garage rock band getting inside a refrigerator carton and being pushed down a steep hill. The Home Blitz 12” bangs through five songs, including Slade’s ode to civic pride, “My Town” -- Good Times! [Parts Unknown]
LINEAS ALBIES / SIXTEENS
Split 10"

An intense weirdo electro-jam split by LA's Sixteens and Spain's Lineas Albies; Hand numbered, limited to 500 [Pomez Records / Siltbreeze]
NAKED ON THE VAGUE
Poltergeist Palm 7"

Australian duo conjure doom and gloom over a staccato rhythm box. A-side has a melodic nod to the darker tropics, while the flip supplies some saturated psychedelic party favors. [Skulltones]
ORANGE
In The Midst Of Chaos CD

This free-jazz group's one and only release, recorded in 1978 by legendary out guitarist Barry Greika, Bob Laramie on bass and Glen "Hobbit" Peterson on drums, screams, howls, blisters, bitch-slaps, and defies categorization as it pushes the '70s into uncharted confusion. Two hundred copies were pressed originally, which earned it the notice from almost no one. Two people did hear it; one sailed it out the kitchen window, the wife of the other said to get the fuckin' thing out of the house. So here it comes again, reissued on CD. Hardcore freeform shit rejuvenated without shame. [DeStijl Records]

WIGGINS
Feed The Ghost 7"

"Part electro surf punk from outer space, part David Lynch outtake, and part home brewed garage opiate, I'm not exactly sure what The Wiggins are, but whatever it is, it's rad. Think the redefinition of lo-fi, Lou Reed in a garbage disposal, Johnny Thunders' vampire alter-ego, leper underwear parties, and successful amateur noir snake charming. Rumor has it there's just one local Houstoner behind all this madness, which makes the effort even more impressive..." -- punkplanet [Dull Knife Records]
WIRE
Object 47 CD

Their eleventh studio album. While retaining their idiosyncratic mix of an avant-garde mindset with classic pop timing, this album boasts a unique formula that somehow manages to sound wholly Wire (in a classic sense) and wholly contemporary. [Pink Flag]

CLOUDLAND CANYON
Lie In Light LP

Half American, half German duo Cloudland Canyon certainly owe a debt to the German underground of the 70's, but they have also added flourishes of baroque pop and even a tinge of the 80's New Zealand scene into their sound. [Kranky Records]
DEAN DIRG
…Raus! LP

Furious and raw as all hell Euro-garage-core. Fourteen new rippers here. [Six Feet Under Records]
BILL DIXON
17 Musicians In Search Of A Sound: Darfur CD

Specially commissioned by Arts for Art, Inc. (producers of the Vision Festival)... A tour de force of orchestral composition and conduction that delves deep into a pair of extended groove-driven, improvisationally steeped mantras -- fully composed by Bill Dixon and performed with The Bill Dixon Orchestra. [Aum Fidelity]
The ESTRANGED

Another new single from this Portland trio playing dark-ish, rockin' post punk. [Dead Ideas Records]
GAUZE
Binbou Yusuri No Rizumu Ni Notte LP

The Fifth LP from Tokyo, Japanese Hardcore legends, GAUZE. Since 1981 GAUZE have played some of the world's most intense hardcore punk, and at this point might hold the title of the World's greatest continually playing, original 1980's hardcore band. A "Living tradition" of Japanese hardcore that has never mellowed with age, GAUZE have played monthly in Tokyo for 27 years, devoting most of their energy to their live performances. Many of their songs are hammered out at their shows long before their sporadic recorded releases (their last release was ten years ago!). GAUZE's songs just seem to get FASTER with each record, and the blinding ten tracks here are no exception. Issued in Japan in late 2007 as a CD-only release, this is one of GAUZE's rawest recording yet and it's first appearance on vinyl. [Prank Records]
H.P. LOVECRAFT
Self Titled (II) CD

Having relocated to Marin County in Northern California in the spring of 1968, H.P. Lovecraft's second, and it must be said, superior album, appeared later that same year. Absolutely vintage acid-drenched California psychedelia, re-issued here in a limited edition of 1000. [Phoenix Records]
HEAVY WINGED
Alive In My Mouth LP+CD

"A massive and dense blowout" comprised of two of the band's dirtiest and, quite simply, heaviest tracks. This is music for tearing down physical walls. Limited Edition of 647 copies pressed on 180g vinyl, and a supplementary CD with 17 minutes of 'bonus' material. [Three Lobed Records]

SHIT AND SHINE
Cherry 2xLP

Immense!" -- The Wire [Riot Season Records]
The STOOGES

Soul Messages From Dimona 2xLP / CD

NOW AVAILABLE ON VINYL AND CD! Following a path blazed in Belize and the Bahamas, The Numero Group finds yet another stop on the soul diaspora tour: Dimona, Israel. Between 1975-1981, a group of American ex-pats took their native sounds of Detroit and Chicago and intermingled them with the messages of the Black Hebrew culture. The results are a heavenly mix of spiritual soul and jazz with an undercurrent of gospel psychedelia. [Numero Group]
MATT VALENTINE & ERIKA ELDER
Ragas Of The Culvert LP+CD

"Ragas of the Culvert," previously self-released as a CD-R in an edition of less than 50 copies as well as a quickly sold out cassette on Fuck It Tapes, is a glorious revisiting of the lunar raga style that created so much of MV+EE's past. This meditative and purely instrumental six track voyage is guaranteed to transport you to distant worlds. [Three Lobed Records]
VIVIAN GIRLS
Tell The World 7"

A brand new 7-inch from Brooklyn female trio THE VIVIAN GIRLS. The band’s debut LP sold out in no time and will be reissued shortly by In The Red. “So what’s the big deal? Well, this trio (CASSIE, KATY and FRANKIE) sound like Electrelane and Scottish pop C86 heroes the Shop Assistants fluttering about and jamming Saints covers on a fluffy cloud in heaven. “Tell the World” is uncomplicated, bounce-around pop, steeped in reverb and the spirit of punk (the low-end sounds Cramps-like), and recorded smile-free--which isn’t necessarily characteristic of the band” -- Exclaim Magazine [Woodsist Records]
WORLD BURNS TO DEATH
The Graveyard Of Utopia LP

8 Track Raging Attack of Absolute Hardcore... with searing guitars, a thundering and rapid fire drum pound, and harsh vocals spitting forth a brutal vision. This third LP from Austin, Texas's WORLD BURNS TO DEATH further evolves and refines their trademark sound as dark, ramcharging ultra-punk comes full circle... Here is the speed and severity of their debut 45's AND the refinement, heaviness and precision of their two previous landmark albums. [Prank Records]

ANAL MAGIC AND THE REV. DWIGHT FRIZZELL
Beyond The Black Crack CD

This little known classic, one of the most unique listening experiences in modern experimental music, was conceptualized by legendary musician, filmmaker, Doctor of Metaphysics and minister in the Universal Church of Life, Reverend Dwight Frizzell. Recorded between 1974 and 1976 in locations as diverse as factories and the pyramid opposite Harry Truman's grave site (as well as more "conventional" concert settings), Beyond the Black Crack is a dark, dizzying and exhilarating journey through free jazz, electronics and environmental sound, all shattered by Frizzell's radical tape editing. This CD adds further material to the original LP: a previously unheard suite from 1977 called "The Wandering Madness of Basilea" and more unreleased material from the Black Crack sessions. [Paradigm Discs]
CHILDREN OF THE SIXTH ROOT RACE
Songs From The Source LP / CD

VINYL NOW AVAILABLE! A lost-and-found 1973 recording of The Source family. These twelve songs were recorded live in the Hollywood Hills as a rehearsal for a concert date that Spirit of ‘76 -- aka YaHoWaH 13, The Savage Sons of YaHoWa, Yodship, and FireWaterAir, now known as Children of the Sixth Root Race -- had at the Whisky. Some great r’n’b-grooved energy, with splashes of synth and organ, a female vocal chorus and streamlined fusion rhythms. [Drag City]
EAT SKULL
Sick To Death LP / CD

NOW AVAILABLE ON CD AND VINYL! "Eat Skull are a quartet hailing from Portland, Oregon, co-masterminded by Rob Enbom (former bushwacker in the ranks of Hospitals and Hole Class) and another original Hospital, Rod Meyer (the greatest living genius of punk). Previous Eat Skull efforts include a cassette-only EP and a pair of 7-inches, all of which might be out of print. Like their brethren and forebears, Eat Skull runs a post pattern deep beyond pop and punk. They bring to the game an extrasensory appreciation of New Zealand's South Island Sound (Great Unwashed, Axemen), Cleveland art-damage skronk (Modern Art Studio, X-X), and the wretched excess of forgotten Midwest hardcore (Stiff Legged Sheep, Chemotherapy). In other words, just what you need!" - Tom Lax, guru [Siltbreeze Records]
KING DARVES
Sun Splits For... The Blind Swimmer LP

The bedrock of this NJ-based concoction is based in folk, but there's no headband and KING DARVES (ASPS, GORGOT, HUMAN ADULT BAND) does not sing about pixies in the moss. This is somewhere between rolled cigs and the foggy vision of Big Pink from somewhere on Jersey Avenue. "An excursion into mountain man folk music, with a few surprises thrown into the mix here and there," as Smooth Assailing puts it, "Pure and earthy." This one-man Meat Puppets with a deep, rich voice has really cobbled something together in his kitchen sink--a shocker, a pleaser, a toe-tapper, a head-nodder. [Destijl Records]

[SNSE Records]
WARNER JEPSON
Totentanz And Other Electronic Works 1958-1973 2xCD

Warner Jepson filled over 200 reels of quarter-inch tape full with electronic sounds at the San Francisco Tape Music Center, Mills College and The National Center for Experiments in Television. Some were used as soundtracks for theater productions and art films, some were heard ephemerally at art galleries, parties and "happenings" in the late '60s and early '70s, but only the soundtrack to Totentanz, a theater work by Carlos Carvajal, was ever released (300 copies on LP in 1971). Melon Expander's 2xCD reissue of that LP includes plenty of other pieces unheard by anyone in the past thirty years -- late '50s musique concrete experiments; rhythmic, prepared-piano-and-tape pieces; and sprawling, meditative synthesizer sound paintings.

ROBEDOOR
Endlessly Blazing LP

"Another bowl of black wax lit up and littered into the smogset. 'Endlessly Blazing' loads together a trio of semi-recent resin sessions: the A is a sidelong sinkhole into lava and quaaludes, the B starts with a sprawling spiral sweetleaf ballad before convulsing into a pissed withdrawal of dread drums, electronic fumes, and damaged howling. Hold it in as long as you can." - ??? [Woodsist Records]

Thirteen tracks recorded in Liverpool and Reykjavik in August and October, 2007, that mix the band’s traditional psychedelic rock sound with a more experimental and avant-garde approach.
DETROIT COBRAS
Original Recordings 6x7"

One of the earliest groups to emerge from the Detroit garage rock scene, the DETROIT COBRAS developed a reputation as the Midwest's finest, and most distinctive, cover band. Preferring to record other artists material to their own, the Cobras would find gems in the vaults of lost R&B and rock’n’roll classics. With songs in hand, the Detroit Cobras modified them to fit their raunchy, swaggering style and aural personality. This set contains all the original recordings including singles and unreleased tracks from 1995-1997. Compiles their very first 3 7" singles plus NINE previously unreleased studio tracks from the same era. [Munster Records]
DRUMS LIKE MACHINE GUNS / MINCEMEAT OR TENSPEED
Split LP

“Mincemeat or Tenspeed at first come off as a smart ass take on Steven Reich. However, as the needle grooves through, Mincemeat builds on the riff, shatters some rhythms, and shifts into new hooks. This is loud minimalism and full of all kinds of great ideas. Drums Like Machine Guns owes more to early Industrial noise than minimalism, but it to attempts to do more with less. For the most part, Drums succeeds and builds some pretty tremendous sounds, stuff that reminds me of what Slicing Grandpa was doing before that duo started ringing Sci Fi future metal. A record worth a few listens especially if you are hip to the noisier stuff on Load, Not Not Fun, or Deathbombarc”--Scott Soriano [Badmaster
FABULOUS DIAMONDS
Self Titled LP

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! A mesmerizing mix of synth, dub, and percussion, woven around honey-ache vocal stylings recalling (in spirit) past Aussie noisemakers Scattered Order or Makers Of The Dead Travel Fast, as well as those of Augustus Pablo, Young Marble Giants, and Suicide. This LP has been in the works for the better part of a year; its release coincides their first American tour (along with Siltbreeze labelmates, Psychedelic Horseshit). [Siltbreeze Records]

OKKYUNG LEE
I Saw The Ghost Of An Unknown Soul And It Said... LP

Anyone who has seen and heard Korean improviser/composer Okkyung Lee blow collective minds with her supremely amazing cello noise, energy, vibration, friction and true sound feeling music knows that in a world of wild and mind-snapping improvisors Okkyung is one of the most exciting players to arrive down the rocky road in some time. This LP contains some of her most deep and resonant, at once furious and hushed string, bow and wood music recorded to date. Beautiful and frightening, daring to be both. Only 400 copies pressed. YA HO WA 13
Penetration: An Aquarian Symphony LP

Probably the most well-known album by Father Yod and his musical family Ya Ho Wa 13, 1974's Penetration: An Aquarian Symphony is about as accessible as this legendary cult (literally) band ever got, largely because Father Yod (a heavyset, bearded ex-Marine born James Edward Baker) engages in comparatively little of his trademark quasi-Native American chanting and atonal Yoko Ono-style vocalizations, preferring instead to concentrate on kettle drum and gong. Father Yod does drive the first half of the closing "Ya Ho Wa 13" with a lengthy and unexpectedly melodic whistling solo at times weirdly evocative of Martin Denny's old exotica albums, or perhaps Ennio Morricone's spaghetti western themes.
